Shopping and Prices in Spanish: Speaking Practice (A1)
Speaking practice you do out loud — read the situation, take each prompt, and SAY your answer before you open the model one. Nobody's listening; that's the point of the rehearsal.
Shopping is the friendliest place to speak your first Spanish: short questions, predictable answers, and a person whose job is to help you. These six prompts cover the entire loop — price, size, too-expensive, try it on, quantity, pay — in plain present-tense sentences you can use on day one.
Two details carry most of the weight. First, cuesta vs cuestan: one item costs, two items cost — prompt one makes you say both. Second, numbers at speed are the real boss fight of shopping; say the model answers' quantities out loud, then swap in different numbers until they come out without counting in English first.
Say each answer before you open the model one. Nobody is listening — that's the point of the rehearsal.
Make it real
The full phrasebook — haggling politely, market vocabulary, and what the seller will say back — is in Spanish for shopping and markets. To watch the price dance happen in a real exchange, read haggling at the market — then come back and run prompt three like you mean it.
Your turn — say it out loud
Out loud: ask how much this shirt costs. Then ask about the pants too.
¿Cuánto cuesta esta camisa? ¿Y cuánto cuestan los pantalones?
Ask if they have it in your size — and in another color.
¿Tiene esta camisa en talla mediana? ¿La tiene en azul?
Say it's too expensive and ask if there's something cheaper.
Es muy caro para mí. ¿Hay algo más barato?
Ask where the fitting rooms are, and say you want to try it on.
¿Dónde están los probadores? Quiero probarme esta camisa.
You want two of something. Say the quantity and ask for the total.
Quiero dos camisetas, por favor. ¿Cuánto es todo?
At the register: ask if you can pay by card, out loud.
¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? Gracias.
You've rehearsed it. Now say it to a person.
Prompts build the reflex; conversation builds the speaker. Live classes with native teachers are where your answers meet real replies.
