italki Alternatives for Spanish: 5 Options Compared (2026)

italki works. You pick a native speaker, book an hour, and talk; for a lot of learners that first month is the best Spanish practice they've ever had. The search for alternatives usually starts later, with one of three moments: the monthly total when you try to practice more than twice a week, the third trial lesson with a tutor who isn't quite right, or a week where nobody notices you didn't book anything. This guide compares five alternatives, with every price checked on each platform's own site on October 14, 2026.

Our disclosure first: Spanish Fluency Club is one of the five, and we compete with italki for some learners. So we'll say plainly where italki is still the better choice, and who our club is not for. If you want italki itself taken apart (prices, credits and the fine print), read our italki review first; if you're comparing on price alone, how much Spanish lessons cost puts every format in the same units.

What italki Offers (checked October 2026)

From italki's own pages, read on October 14, 2026:

  • One-on-one lessons with 2,353 Spanish tutors in its search results. Each tutor sets a price. The first page of the search shows trial lessons from USD 5 to 18; on profiles we opened, regular lessons started at USD 10–22. Tutors are either professional teachers (with teaching credentials) or community tutors (native or fluent speakers who teach conversation).
  • Group classes: 58 Spanish group classes in the next three days, USD 10–18 per class (most at USD 14), 45 or 60 minutes, by level and topic. The one we opened had 5 spots.
  • How you pay: you buy italki credits and book lesson by lesson. Credits aren't refunded in cash and expire after 12 months without account activity; lesson packages must be used within six months of purchase (italki's payment terms).

Why People Look for an italki Alternative

  1. The bill grows with practice. Per lesson, italki is cheap. Per month, at the three or four hours a week that build conversation, it adds up, because every hour has its own price.
  2. Finding the right tutor takes auditions. Quality, method and reliability vary tutor by tutor. Each audition is a trial lesson and a scheduling round.
  3. They want someone else to plan the course. An italki tutor may follow a method or may not; there's no platform-wide curriculum.
  4. They want a fixed rhythm or a flat price. Pay-as-you-go is flexible, and flexibility is also what makes it easy to skip a week.

Before you leave: if the only thing you want is a group, italki now has one. Its group classes are a fair way to try practicing with other learners without changing platforms. What they aren't is a membership: you buy each class, usually with a different group each time.

1. Preply: the closest thing to italki

Preply is also a marketplace: each tutor sets a price, and you choose one. On October 14, 2026, its Spanish page listed 15,444 tutors, prices from $3 a lesson with an average of $17, and the first tutors it recommended charged $25–50 per 50-minute lesson. Its own table put the average for both native and non-native Spanish tutors at $25 an hour.

The real difference is how you pay. After the trial lesson, Preply sells a subscription tied to one tutor, renewed in cycles; italki sells credits you spend lesson by lesson. The subscription helps some learners keep a weekly habit and frustrates others when lessons go unused. Our Preply review covers the fine print.

Choose Preply over italki if you want a larger choice of tutors and a subscription keeps you showing up. Stay with italki if you want to stop and start freely.

2. BaseLang: unlimited one-on-one at a flat price

BaseLang removes the meter. From its home page on October 14, 2026: Real World, $179 a month, unlimited one-on-one classes, and Real World Lite, $99 a month, up to one 30-minute class a day. Both include its ten-level curriculum (optional), 300+ teachers bookable 24/7, a first week for $1 and a 35-day guarantee (a full refund plus $20). The home page doesn't say how long a Real World class lasts.

Choose BaseLang over italki if you'd take a class most days and want it one-on-one. Stay with italki if you'd rather always see the same tutor: BaseLang lets you pick teachers, but it's built around booking whoever is free. We compare BaseLang with its own alternatives in BaseLang alternatives.

3. Comligo: one-on-one on a fixed weekly plan

Comligo sells one-on-one classes with native tutors on a weekly plan: $30 a class at one class a week, $25 at two, $20 at three ($30, $50 or $60 a week), checked October 14, 2026. Its pricing page doesn't say how long a class lasts, so ask before comparing per-hour prices.

Choose Comligo over italki if you like one-on-one but want the decision about whether to book this week taken off your plate. Our Comligo review covers the details.

4. Lingoda: a school with a curriculum

Lingoda is the most school-like option: 60-minute live classes in groups of 3–5 students, following a curriculum level by level. Group plans per 4 weeks, at regular price on October 14, 2026: $49.99 for 4 classes, $89.99 for 8, $144.99 for 16, $224.99 for 32, with "save" prices shown on the bigger plans ($76.99, $130.99 and $213.99). Unused class credits roll over. Private plans exist too.

Choose Lingoda over italki if you want someone else to plan every class and you're happy in a small group of strangers. Our Lingoda review explains the plans.

5. Spanish Fluency Club: unlimited, in groups

This is the alternative for people whose main problem with italki is the meter and the empty weeks. Membership includes 25+ live classes a week with native teachers, grouped as beginner, intermediate and upper intermediate (conversation, grammar and pronunciation sessions), for a flat $20/month, starting with a 7-day free trial. You go to the classes that fit your week; the club lives on Skool, where the calendar and the community are, so you keep seeing the same teachers and classmates.

I haven't been here long but I can already tell how useful the classes are. They are well structured so no awkward down time and they feel very welcoming and friendly. So happy I found it.

— Dominique Toth, club member

It's not the right choice if you want one-on-one attention in every class (italki, Preply, BaseLang and Comligo all do that), C1/C2-level work, DELE exam prep, or a textbook curriculum chapter by chapter: our classes go up to upper intermediate, not beyond. It is the right choice if you want to speak Spanish several times a week, with people who notice when you're gone, at a price that doesn't change with how often you come. Start the 7-day free trial and try a few classes this week.

What You'd Pay at Two Different Rhythms

The honest comparison is by the hours you'll actually spend speaking: two hours a week (about 8–9 a month) and roughly an hour a day (about 30 a month). Tutor rows are arithmetic at round prices; the rest are published prices checked on October 14, 2026.

Option~2 hours a week~1 hour a day
italki tutor at $10 an hour~$80–90 a month~$300 a month
italki group classes at USD 14~$110–125 a month~$420 a month
Preply at its $17 average~$135–155 a month~$510 a month
BaseLang$99 a month (Lite, if 30-minute classes are enough)$179 a month (Real World)
Comligo$50 a week at 2 classes ($200 per 4 weeks)Not possible: the top plan is 3 classes a week
Lingoda group$89.99 per 4 weeks (8 classes)$224.99 per 4 weeks (32 classes, the largest plan)
Spanish Fluency Club$20/month$20/month

The pattern: at a few hours a week, italki is hard to beat on price; past that, flat prices win, and the real choice becomes one-on-one (BaseLang) or groups (a membership). That's the trade-off we unpack in group vs. private Spanish classes.

How to Choose

  • You like italki and only want more tutors to choose from: Preply.
  • You'd take a one-on-one class most days: BaseLang.
  • You want one-on-one, but on a fixed plan: Comligo.
  • You want a structured course in a small group: Lingoda.
  • You want lots of speaking at a flat price, with a community: a group membership like ours. Our guides to Spanish conversation practice online and choosing an online conversation group cover what to look for in any of them.
  • You want a tutor for one specific job (an interview, the DELE, a stubborn pronunciation problem): stay on italki. It's still one of the best places for that, and it combines well with group practice somewhere else.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best alternatives to italki for Spanish?

It depends on what's pushing you away. If you want another tutor marketplace with a bigger catalog, Preply (15,444 Spanish tutors listed, lessons from $3 and an average of $17). If you take a class most days, BaseLang's unlimited one-on-one plan is $179 a month. If you want one-on-one on a fixed weekly plan, Comligo charges $30, $25 or $20 per class at 1, 2 or 3 classes a week. If you want a curriculum in small groups, Lingoda's group plans run $49.99–$224.99 per 4 weeks. And if you want lots of speaking at a flat price, in groups, a membership like Spanish Fluency Club (prices checked October 14, 2026).

Is there anything cheaper than italki?

Per lesson, not by much: italki's cheapest Spanish tutors are among the cheapest anywhere, and Preply starts at a similar level ($3 a lesson on its price filter, checked October 14, 2026). Per month, yes, if you speak a lot. At about an hour a day, a $10-an-hour tutor comes to roughly $300 a month, while flat prices stay flat: BaseLang is $179 a month for unlimited one-on-one classes, Lingoda's largest group plan is $224.99 for 32 classes per 4 weeks, and a group membership costs the same however many classes you attend.

italki vs Preply: which is better for Spanish?

Both are tutor marketplaces where each tutor sets the price, so the tutor matters more than the platform. The differences are in how you pay. italki sells credits and you book lesson by lesson; credits expire after 12 months without account activity, and lesson packages have to be used within six months. Preply's lessons are 50 minutes and, after the trial, are sold as a subscription tied to one tutor. Preply listed 15,444 Spanish tutors with an average price of $17 a lesson on October 14, 2026. Pick italki for pay-as-you-go flexibility; pick Preply if a subscription helps you keep a weekly rhythm.

Does italki have group classes for Spanish?

Yes. On October 14, 2026, italki's Group Class page listed 58 Spanish group classes in the next three days, priced USD 10–18 per class (most at USD 14), 45 or 60 minutes long, organized by level and topic. The class we opened had 5 spots. Each class is bought one at a time, so it works like a pay-per-class version of group practice rather than a membership. If you want the same group every week at a flat price, see how to choose an online conversation group.

italki vs BaseLang: which should I choose?

It comes down to how many classes you'll take. italki charges per lesson at each tutor's rate, which is cheaper at one to three lessons a week. BaseLang charges a flat $179 a month for unlimited one-on-one classes, or $99 for up to one 30-minute class a day, with a first week for $1 (checked October 14, 2026). If you'd take a class most days, BaseLang usually wins; if you want one chosen tutor once or twice a week, italki does. More on BaseLang in BaseLang alternatives.
