BaseLang Alternatives: 5 Options Compared (2026 Prices)

BaseLang's pitch is simple and strong: unlimited one-on-one Spanish classes with native teachers for one flat price. If you're reading about alternatives, something in that pitch doesn't fit you. Maybe $179 a month is more than you'll actually use, maybe you'd rather practice in a group, or maybe you want a curriculum that someone else plans for you. This guide compares five alternatives, with every price checked on each platform's own site on October 19, 2026.

Our disclosure first: Spanish Fluency Club is one of the five options below, and we compete with BaseLang for some of the same learners. So we'll show our work, say plainly where BaseLang is the better choice, and say who our club is not for. If you're comparing on price alone, our breakdown of how much Spanish lessons cost puts every format in the same units.

What BaseLang Offers (checked October 2026)

From BaseLang's home page, checked on October 19, 2026:

PlanPriceWhat you get
Real World$179 a monthUnlimited one-on-one classes; the ten-level Real World curriculum, 664 elective lessons and a DELE program (A2 to C2)
Real World Lite$99 a monthUp to one 30-minute class a day; credits don't accumulate if you skip days
Bootcamp$1,200 (or four monthly payments of $325)An 80-hour program with a dedicated teacher, 2 to 4 hours a day

The rest of the offer: 300+ teachers from 7 countries, classes on Zoom bookable at the last minute or days in advance, 24 hours a day, cancellation of classes with no penalty, a first week for $1, and a guarantee for the Real World and Lite plans: a full refund plus $20 if you don't love it within the first 35 days. That's a genuinely good deal for a learner who uses it. BaseLang's home page doesn't state how long a Real World class lasts, so ask if that matters to you.

Why People Look for a BaseLang Alternative

  1. They won't use "unlimited." $179 a month is cheap per class if you take one most days, and expensive if you take two a week. The value of an unlimited plan depends entirely on how many classes you'll actually take.
  2. They want a group. Every BaseLang plan is one-on-one. Some learners speak more freely, and stay motivated longer, with other students in the room.
  3. They want one teacher, always. BaseLang lets you browse and pick teachers, and teachers leave notes so the next one can pick up where the last left off. If you'd rather build a relationship with a single tutor, a marketplace is built for that.
  4. They want a set syllabus. BaseLang has a curriculum, but it's optional ("You aren't forced to use our curriculum," says its home page). Some learners want a school that sets the class topics for them.

1. italki: one tutor, pay as you go

italki is the opposite of BaseLang's model: no subscription, you pay each lesson at the teacher's own rate. italki's own pricing guide puts regular lessons at typically $4–20 with community tutors and $10–40 with professional teachers; on October 19, 2026, the search page showed trial lessons from USD 5, and trials are usually shorter and cheaper than the regular lessons behind them. A teacher's "from" price doesn't say which lesson length it buys, so check before comparing.

Choose italki over BaseLang if you'll take one to three lessons a week and want the same tutor every time. Stay with BaseLang if you take classes most days: at that volume, per-lesson pricing adds up fast. Our italki review covers how it works.

2. Preply: the biggest tutor catalog

Preply is also a marketplace, with lessons quoted per 50 minutes. On October 19, 2026, its price filter for Spanish ran from $3 to $40+ per lesson, its own page put the average at $17, and the first ten tutors it recommended charged $20–50 per lesson. One tip: Preply showed us prices in our local currency until we switched it to USD.

Choose Preply if you want a huge choice of accents, specialties and price points, and a tutor-by-tutor relationship. Read how its subscription handles unused lessons in our Preply review before you subscribe.

3. Comligo: one-on-one, on a fixed weekly plan

Comligo sells one-on-one classes with native tutors on a subscription priced per class: $30 at one class a week, $25 at two and $20 at three, billed every 4 weeks (checked October 19, 2026). Its pricing page doesn't say how long a paid class lasts, and classes cancelled less than 72 hours ahead are lost.

Choose Comligo if you want private classes but know you'll only take one to three a week, and a fixed rhythm helps you show up. Our Comligo review covers the fine print.

4. Lingoda: a school with a curriculum

Lingoda is the most "school-like" option: 60-minute classes in groups of 3–5 students, following a curriculum level by level, on plans of 4 to 32 classes per 4 weeks. Group plans run from $49.99 for 4 classes to $224.99 for 32 (about $7–12.50 a class) at regular price, private plans from $119.99 to $469.99, with first-month "save" prices for new students on three of the four plan sizes (15%, 10% and 5% off; checked October 19, 2026). Lingoda's pricing page says unused class credits roll over.

Choose Lingoda if you want someone else to plan every class and you like a small group. Our Lingoda review explains the plans and the Sprint. If Lingoda is the one you're leaving, see Lingoda alternatives.

5. Spanish Fluency Club: unlimited, in groups

This is the alternative closest to BaseLang's model, flat price and as many classes as you want, but in a different format: live group classes instead of one-on-one. Membership includes 25+ live classes a week with native teachers, grouped as beginner, intermediate and upper intermediate (conversation, grammar and pronunciation sessions), for a flat $20/month, starting with a 7-day free trial. You go to the classes that fit your week; the club lives on Skool, where the calendar and the community are.

I absolutely love this community! The classes are fun & interactive and the resources available within the group are excellent. The teachers know the students, students get to know each other & no matter where you are on your Spanish learning journey, there's something for everyone! I highly recommend joining - you won't regret it!

— Nikki Paul, club member

It's not the right choice if you want one-on-one attention in every class (that's BaseLang's strength), C1/C2-level work, DELE exam prep (BaseLang has a DELE program; we don't), or a textbook curriculum to follow chapter by chapter: our classes go up to upper intermediate, not beyond. It is the right choice if you want to speak Spanish several times a week with other learners, at a price that doesn't change with how often you come. Start the 7-day free trial and try a few classes this week.

What You'd Pay at Two Different Rhythms

The honest way to compare is by the hours you'll actually spend speaking. Here's two hours a week (about 8–9 hours a month) and roughly an hour a day (about 30 hours a month). Tutor rows are arithmetic at a round $10 an hour; the rest are published prices checked on October 19, 2026.

Option~2 hours a week~1 hour a day
BaseLang Real World$179 a month$179 a month
italki or Preply tutor at $10 an hour~$80–90 a month~$300 a month
Comligo$50 a week at 2 classes ($200 per 4 weeks)Not possible: the top plan is 3 classes a week
Lingoda group$89.99 per 4 weeks (8 classes)$224.99 per 4 weeks (32 classes, the largest plan)
Spanish Fluency Club$20/month$20/month

The pattern: at low volume, pay per lesson; at high volume, flat prices win, and the real choice is one-on-one (BaseLang) or groups (a membership). That's the same trade-off we unpack in group vs. private Spanish classes.

How to Choose

  • You take classes most days and want one-on-one: BaseLang is hard to beat. Stay, or try it with the $1 first week.
  • You take a few classes a week and want one tutor: italki or Preply.
  • You want private classes on a fixed schedule: Comligo.
  • You want a structured course in a small group: Lingoda.
  • You want lots of speaking at a flat price, with other learners: a group membership like ours. Our guides to Spanish conversation practice online and choosing an online conversation group cover what to look for in any of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best alternatives to BaseLang?

It depends on why you're leaving. If you take only a few classes a week, a pay-per-lesson marketplace like italki or Preply usually costs less. If you want a fixed weekly rhythm with one-on-one classes, Comligo sells 1, 2 or 3 classes a week at $30, $25 or $20 per class. If you want a curriculum with group or private classes, Lingoda publishes plans per 4 weeks. And if you want unlimited speaking at a flat price but in groups, a group membership like Spanish Fluency Club is the closest match to BaseLang's model (prices checked October 19, 2026).

Is there anything cheaper than BaseLang?

Per month, yes, if you take fewer hours. BaseLang's Real World plan is $179 a month for unlimited private classes, and Real World Lite is $99 a month for up to one 30-minute class a day (checked October 19, 2026). Two hours a week with a $10-an-hour tutor on a marketplace comes to about $80–90 a month; Lingoda's 8-class group plan is $89.99 per 4 weeks at regular price. If you take an hour or more a day, BaseLang's unlimited plan is hard to beat for one-on-one classes, and a flat-price group membership is the cheaper option if you're happy sharing the class.

BaseLang vs italki: which is better?

They solve different problems. BaseLang is a flat monthly price ($179 for unlimited private classes, checked October 19, 2026) with its own curriculum and 300+ teachers you can book at short notice. italki is a marketplace: you pay each lesson at the teacher's own rate, so it's cheaper for a few lessons a week and more expensive at high volume. Pick BaseLang if you'll take classes most days; pick italki if you want to choose one tutor and see them once or twice a week.

BaseLang vs Lingoda: what's the difference?

BaseLang sells one-on-one classes, unlimited for $179 a month on the Real World plan. Lingoda sells mainly small-group classes (3–5 students, 60 minutes) on plans of 4 to 32 classes per 4 weeks, from $49.99 to $224.99 at regular price, plus private plans from $119.99 (checked October 19, 2026). Lingoda follows a structured curriculum class by class; BaseLang has its own curriculum but lets you skip it and do your own thing.

Does BaseLang offer group classes?

Not on the plans its home page lists. On October 19, 2026, BaseLang's home page described its classes as one-on-one, and none of its programs (Real World, Real World Lite and the Bootcamp) was a group class. If you want group classes, look at Lingoda (small groups with a curriculum) or a group membership like Spanish Fluency Club (live group classes with a flat monthly price).
